Mike Long — Owner & Lead Instructor, A-B-CPR & First Aid Training

Owner since 1998 · AHA BLS Training Center Faculty · EMT-B · 28+ years teaching CPR in San Diego

Mike's Bio

Mike Long has owned A-B-CPR since 1998. He started as an EMT, picked up his American Heart Association CPR Instructor credential, became an AHA BLS Instructor Trainer, and ended up running the company. Under his leadership A-B-CPR went from a small north-county shop teaching fewer than a thousand people a year to one of the largest private training organizations in San Diego, with over 15,000 students annually. He still teaches and oversees every class he can.

What Mike teaches

      • BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers. The AHA-branded certification required by every San Diego hospital.
      • CPR (Adult/AED and Pediatric) for general workforce, parents, fitness pros, and safety-trained roles. Follows AHA guidelines, OSHA-compliant.
      • Blended option of CPR and BLS classes. Complete the online portion at your own pace, then come in for the hands-on skills session.
      • Corporate and on-site instruction. Mike leads the on-site classes at hospitals, schools, and corporate facilities.
      • Instructor training. The program that certifies new A-B-CPR instructors.

      • AHA BLS Instructor Trainer (since 2000)
      • AHA CPR Instructor (since 1998)
      • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B). Miramar College, 1997
      • Owner, A-B-CPR EMSA-Approved Child Care Training Program

How he got here

Before CPR teaching, Mike built businesses. He owned and operated La Jolla Brewing Company (microbrewery and restaurant) and La Jolla Paws pet supply, and worked as Sales Manager for rooms and meeting revenues at Holiday Inn on the Bay. In 1997 he went back to Miramar College for his EMT-B, started teaching CPR on the side to earn extra income, and bought A-B-CPR in 1998.

The combination of operator instincts, sales experience, and instructor credentials is what scaled the company. By 2000 he’d earned AHA BLS Instructor Trainer status. By 2021 he was appointed AHA BLS Training Center Faculty for the Western Region. Along the way A-B-CPR opened a second location in Oceanside, expanded into AED sales and compliance support, built our own state-approved Health & Safety program, and grew past 15,000 students per year.

He still teaches. Mike picks up the phone. Email goes to him directly.
