Planning a permitted event? The City of San Diego requires a medical plan with every citywide special event permit: 911 access, someone certified in CPR and first aid, and a first aid station. Is Your Business Required to Have an AED?
California law says yes for more businesses every year:
- Gyms and fitness studios must have an AED, trained staff, and documented 30-day readiness checks (Health & Safety Code §104113).
- Newer buildings with an occupancy of 200 or more (built or renovated since 2017) must have an AED on site (SB 287).
- Schools with athletic programs must have at least one AED per campus (AB 2009).
- Anyone who acquires an AED must notify local EMS and keep it maintained to AHA guidelines (§1797.196).
If any of those sound like you, renting puts an AED on site without the upfront cost, with maintenance handled. Call us and we’ll talk through what your situation requires.
Why Rent From A-B-CPR
We’re trainers first. A-B-CPR Training in San Diego has taught CPR and AED skills since 1998. We know these devices because we teach on them every day.
Maintenance is on us. Pads and batteries expire whether you use them or not. With a rental, tracking and replacing them is our job, not yours.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to rent an AED in San Diego? Long-term workplace rentals are $75 per month per AED on a two-year term, with maintenance handled by A-B-CPR. Event rentals are quoted by date, duration, and unit count. Call (619) 281-3304 and we’ll quote your event fast.
Does my San Diego event need an AED? The City requires a medical plan with every special event permit, and expectations grow with crowd size. Many organizers and insurers include an AED at any size because survival drops roughly 10% per minute without defibrillation. Confirm permit specifics with the Office of Special Events at (619) 685-1331.
Is renting cheaper than buying an AED? Upfront, yes. Our LIFEPAK CR2 sales package runs $1,795 to own, plus upkeep over the years. Renting spreads the cost out with maintenance handled. Our rent vs. buy guide walks through the math.
What AED will I get? We supply trusted brands: Philips HeartStart, Physio-Control LIFEPAK, and HeartSine. We’ll match the unit to your rental when you book.
Do volunteers need training to use an AED? Modern AEDs give voice instructions and won’t shock a heart that doesn’t need it. That said, trained hands act faster. Our CPR (Adult/AED and Pediatric) classes can certify your staff or event crew before the day.
What happens if the AED is used in an emergency? Call us afterward and we’ll get your site back to rescue-ready.
Can you train our staff or volunteers? Yes. That’s our core business. CPR (Adult/AED and Pediatric) and Combination CPR/AED & First Aid classes run at our two San Diego locations, or we come to you.
