Bleeding Control-
Types of Bleeding:

Arterial– Cuts to arteries that are bringing blood from the heart. This blood is under pressure and tends to pulse like the heart. It typically is bright red in color. This can be life threatening! Call 911 immediately!!

Venous– Cuts to veins bringing blood back to the heart. This is a slow, oozing cut that is darker in color. Some can be life threatening, so Call 911 based on size of cut and amount of blood!

Capillary– The scrape and removal of the upper layer of skin. Not life threatening but painful. Clean with soap and water and cover. Be sure to keep an eye out for infections!

 How to stop bleeding:

1. Direct Pressure over wound with Sterile Gauze
2. Elevate injury above heart
3. Pressure bandage to hold gauze and apply pressure
4. Pressure point over main artery, if you can’t control with above steps. Arterial bleeding only!

Types of cuts:


Lacerations- cuts into the skin.

Abrasions- Scrapes that remove the upper dermal layer of the skin. Clean with soap and water to reduce infections. Cover with gauze

Avulsions– A cut that takes a flap out of the skin. Lay skin back in place, cover with gauze, elevate.

Amputations– loss of an extremity. Apply pressure and elevate. Find extremity and keep cool and dry. Transport with victim.

Punctures– An object that penetrates the body. Do not remove object. Support and cover wound. Call 911

Internal Bleeding-
Signs & Symptoms:
1. Pain, tenderness, at site of injury
2. Vomiting bright red blood, or the color of dark coffee grounds
3. Tender, rigid, and or distended abdomen
4. Shock- weakness or dizziness.

Treatment:

1. Activate 911

2. Monitor Airway

3. Treat for shock
Nose Bleeds-
Place the Patient in a sitting position and lean forward. Pinch the fleshy portion of the nostril. Place an ice pack on the bridge of nose if bleeding persists.
